Abstract
This text presents an interview with the romanist and lexicologist Gerd Wotjak, professor emeritus of the University of Leipzig (Germany), who has dedicated part of his publications to studying semantic, cultural and translation aspects of phraseological units (PUs) from a contrasting point of view between Spanish and German. Moreover, he has coordinated several collective works on phraseology and directs the collection Studien zur romanischen Sprachwissenschaft und interkulturellen Kommunikation (Peter Lang). In this interview, among other relevant issues for the study of PUs, Gerd Wotjak discusses the use of PUs by native speakers and learners, the concept of phraseological field, the peculiarities of collocations, the treatment of PUs in the dictionary, translation strategies or techniques to guarantee correct equivalences in the translation of PUs, the main cultural similarities between German and Spanish PUs as well as the convenience of deepening the semantic and pragmatic study of PUs.
