Abstract
The aim of this study is a re-reading of Ballys stylistics in connexion with the linguistics contributions of the XXI century. In the first place, we present both Bally the man and his work as founder of Modern Stylistics at the beginning of the XX century. Saussures disciple was the first to break with classical rhetoric and its study of tropes. He opened a new path to analyse the effects of expressiveness in language. In the second place, we take up the problem of figurative language. For Bally, figurative language is linked with expressiveness and with the problem of choice. Therefore, Bally made a significant effort to establish a languages stylistics whilst distancing himself from the stylistics of famous literary authors. In some ways, when he studied the classical stylistic figures such as metaphor, metonymy and synecdoche, he was prefiguring todays works on linguistic meaning.
