Abstract

The Rougon-Macquart series sheds light on violence and, more specifically, on domestic violence, which often goes hand in hand with alcoholism, destroying families and debasing individuals. This brutality, supported by its correctional nature, sometimes reaches its climax with the death of the wife, or the children. Zola expresses his indignation at this apparent tolerance of such violence, pointing out other inconsistencies such as the complicit silence of society and the inefficiency of justice system, which hesitates to intervene.
