Abstract
Audio description is an emergent translation modality which aims mainly to provide accessibility to blind or partially-sighted people, in order to allow the comprehension and enjoyment of the film in the same way as the fully sighted viewer. In this article, we present a study about a taboo topic: the translation of sexual images into words. Firstly, we have identified the scenes with explicit sexual content in the French film La vie d’Adèle (Kechiche, 2013). We have analyzed the audio description and determined the translation strategies used to do it. We have observed omissions, which lead to a significant absence of audio description of certain scenes, as well as particularizations, that is to say, precision to describe certain sexual acts. These strategies can lead to a misunderstanding of the receiver but can also betray the patronization with which handicapped people are treated.
