Abstract
In this article we seek to highlight the socio-historical, cultural and properly linguistic background of the works of Fernando Araújo, a Spanish philologue and pedagogue, author of an imposing French language grammar (Madrid, 1889), both historical, critical and itemized. We seek to show which French and German linguistic theories (especially, as far as history of the French language and phonetics are concerned) were known to this scholar, and which of them were used in his work and in which way they were integrated in it. In this perspective, our bio-bibliographical study of Araújo's work is concerned with the fields of linguistic historiography, history of French language abroad and the history of grammatical concepts as far as their reception abroad and their adaptation to the new administrative framework of an educational system.
