Abstract

By enunciating his concept of "connaturalization" in 1773, Tomás de Iriarte was reflecting his own experience as a translator and creator of literary models. Iriarte developed his theories based on his own difficulties and solutions. The study of an autograph manuscript from 1770 that contains the translation of Fagan's La Pupille allows us to follow Iriarte's work through the successive corrections made in his own hand. We see how Iriarte, guided by the high standards he set for himself, adapts his characters and polishes the language until he achieves a translation that is good enough to appear not to be a translation.
