Abstract

This paper aims to unveil the presence of both self-evident and hidden cultural elements from some French and Francophone comic strips, thus leading the way to a work of adaptation and reuse through imitation, creation and staging of contemporary French bande dessinée. Starting from a diachronic analysis which takes into account French-speaking comic foundations, our approach becomes synchronic in order to focus on the pillars that hold this artwork: text and image. Without further consideration on cartoon structure within these works, our interests will be laid upon relationships between both characters’ gestures and framework on one side, and the written message on the other side. As carriers of either visible or hidden cultural information, their interaction with regard to the reader helps to unearth cultural marks associated to the target language, while highlighting them on dramatization activities.
