Abstract
This paper begins by studying the role assigned to reading activities in the most popular foreign-language-teaching methods. It points out the inherent weaknesses of the reading activities when conducted in accordance with such methods. Our attention is then turned to foreign language reading research carried out over the last 35 years, focusing on research which has examined the contribution made by both foreign language proficiency and first language reading ability. We conclude with a set of suggested guidelines for reading instruction.
