Abstract
Refranes o Proverbios en Romance is a voluminous work containing 8,557 proverbs, from which 134 are of Galician origin. That work by Hernán Núñez de Toledo y Guzmán (1475-1553) was posthumously published in 1555 in Salamanca. In 1627, almost one hundred years later, the work Vocabulario de refranes y frases proverbiales y otras fórmulas comunes de la lengua castellanaby Gonzalo de Correas (1571-1631) was published containing 18,000 proverbs –only 54 of them are Galician proverbs. Although the Galician proverbs included in both works contain several grammatical mistakes –due to the fact that both authors had no knowledge of the Galician language– these books have been essential for preserving Galician cultural heritage and have even been the basis on which latter proverb collections were made.
