Abstract
The aim of our paper is to propose a syntactic and semantic description of the phraseological unit "Qui dit X, dit Y / Quien dice X, dice Y" in French and Spanish through its diachronic evolution. The French expression conveys a stereotypical relationship between X and Y, whereas the Spanish one seems rather to set up a concession. "Qui dit X, dit Y" is an evidential phraseological unit that denotes a certain modality, which echoes a generic sentence –and therefore a stereotype– and that implies polyphony.
