Abstract

This article surveys major environmental themes (global environmental crisis and massive animal extinction) in the literary works of Hélène Grimaud. The aim is to trace the influence of the German romantic philosophy of nature on her oeuvre. The article analyses the breakdown of the bond between humans and nature, and the critique of instrumental reason. It also explores the underlying myth of original paradise, the exemplary figure of the wolf in the planetary disaster, as well as the place taken by music—among all arts— in order to recover a spiritual re-enchantment of the world.
