Abstract
Many contemporary researchers define the Spanish eighteenth century as the century of translations. During this rich period, some of these translations focused on French pedagogical texts intended for the instruction of enlightened women. It was then that many of these writings fell into the hands of the censors. The Council of Castile questioned several of these translations on the grounds that some of them directly attacked the Christian faith. The result was translations halfway between adaptation and translation. This research will attempt to shed some more light on the translation and censorship of three works by Stéphanie Félicité de Genlis: Tales of the Castle (1746), Adelaide and Theodore (1782) and Annals of Virtue (1802). In a century in which censorship greatly limited thepractice of literary translation and editing, the aim is to analyse the censorship procedure, self-censorship, re-translations, adaptations, etc.
