Abstract
Nestled between the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, is the city of Tangier. With its magnificent colours, worthy of a painter’s palette, Tangier, a melting pot of people, will captivate the painter Matisse and will influence his art. His work «Zorah sur la terrasse» whose model is a young prostitute, will serve the Algerian writer Abdelkader Djemaï as a pretext and a guiding thread to make us penetrate, with respect and admiration, into the art of Matisse as well as into the beauty of this Moroccan city. His book, which bears the same title as Matisse’s painting, is actually a letter that Djemaï writes to the painter (using Matisse’s real correspondence) in which he compares the cities of Tangier and in what they have exotic and everyday, as he also evokes the two figures: that of Matisse and that of his grandfather.
