Abstract

This novel places us in an enigmatic Middle-Eastern village, where Noor awaits her punishment: victim of a rape, she is sentenced to death by stoning for adultery. A French woman on a humanitarian mission accompanies this poor lonely woman, who accepts her fate, stoically. Two antagonistic societies are represented through these characters: Noor embodies the woman subjected to Islamic laws, while the Parisian does not understand her impassiveness and decides to rebel in order to defend her rights. This article aims to analyse the way in which Vénus Khoury-Ghata exposes the immeasurable cultural gap that exists between Eastern and Western societies and the mutual incomprehension that results from it.
