Abstract

The purpose of our investigation is to emphasise the work of Philippe Pinel’s Traité médico-philosophique sur l’aliénation mentale ou la manie, published in 1801. In the first place, we will focus on the treatment of madness from Antiquity until the 19th century. Secondly, we will analyze the repercussions of this treatise, not only in France but also in Spain where it was introduced thanks to the translation of Luis Garnerio y Allavena, Tratado médico-filosófico de la enagenación del alma o manía, published in 1804. The study of these texts will help us to create the image of madness in 19th century France and Spain, and this will help us to underline the significance of translation between two languages, between two cultures
