Abstract

The aim of this article is the study of the mechanisms through which the recourse to animals articulates the textual and scenic construction of exoticism. To this end, we will analyze the work Les éléphants de la pagode (1845) by Amable de Saint-Hilaire and Anicet Bourgeois. It is therefore about determining the role of the animal in the construction of imperialist discourse as a central element in the (re) presentation of oriental alterity, as well as in the diffusion and perpetuation of stereotypes, specifically those associated with the notion of exoticism, that made these others a thinkable element, tangible and, consequently, mastered.
