Abstract

There are two main topics within the framework of terror in the 18th century: cemeteries and underground. Ideal for mystery and crime, these concepts immerse the reader in another world where superfi cial logic and morals have no place. It is the perfect atmosphere for a disturbed mind. Ruins become clearly disturbing during the second half of this century. In order to analyse these horrifi c and landscape elements, this work focuses on two moral tales by Loaisel de Tréogate (1752-1812): Le Crime puni and L’Empire de la beauté. Both tales are part of his Soirées de mélancolie (1777), which is a relevant work of this period.
