Between Rousseau and Chateaubriand, Loaisel de Tréogate (1752-1812) is one of those sentimental and moralistic novelists from the second half of the 18th century promoting sensibility and sensitivity. We deem the study of Loaisel de Tréogate and his work interesting, where forerunner traits helping to formulate the 19th century Romanticism can be found. Through the analysis of the different stories making up the Soirées de mélancolie (1777), which is a significant work of this period, we show that Loaisel de Tréogate deserves to be called Romantic writer, along with the great Romantic authors of the 19th century.
