Abstract
Halfway between Cuba and France, Heredia is one of the most outstanding poets of the Parnasse in late 19th century French literature. Following Leconte de Lisles precepts, this poetic trend is especially concerned about form, and considers the sonnet the ideal strophe, due to its long tradition and prestige in the Western world. Heredia places himself in this tradition and succeeds in giving the sonnet an unusually achieved quality. We present here the poems included in Les Conquérants, a part of his collected poems Les Trophées (1893). We emphasize that most trends of modern Cultural Studies would not agree with Heredias point of view.
