Zusammenfassung

The Western view of the world isfundamentally a binary one, in which institutions(political, scientific and religious) have tried topass off as natural those distinctions which arecultural in origin, particularly those concerningmen and women. The male/female organicdistinction has been used as supposed evidencefor the creation of gender constructs. However, biology today shows that an infinite diversity ofsexual orientations and identities exists withinboth animal and human worlds. What is theeffect of “otherness” within oneself when “I amthe other”? The post-modern novel Chéri-Chéri byPhilippe Djian questions the legitimacy of humanbinary and the distinction between sexes andgenders.
