Abstract
A reflection on reading for beginner level teaching / learning of French as a foreign language has made us feel that certain peripheral aspects are in our opinion of fundamental importance and need to be re-examined to develop the skill. We are thinking of motivation, metalanguage and reference works. We propose specific activities for each of the peripheral aspects which will enhance the reading of French in a globalizing context.
