Abstract

The main aim of this paper is to highlight two of the main translation challenges faced by a translator when he undertakes the task of translating, in this case from French into Spanish, contemporary narratives classified by critics as littérature de banlieue or littérature urbaine. These challenges are the Français Contemporain des Cités (FCC) and translinguistic hybridisation. In this paper, we identify the most relevant resources used by the writer Faïza Guène in her works to represent the codified language of the banlieue, (verlanesque and argot practices, phonetic, syntactic, grammatical and lexical variations) and heterolingualism (confluence of French, Arabic and English). We then define the main challenges faced by the translator of these texts in the phases of understanding the original text and translating it into the target language. Finally, we set out the solutions adopted and the strategies implemented to overcome the challenges posed by this codified language, which may help in the translation of other works by authors within the framework of these literary aesthetics.
