Abstract

Over the last decade, the corpus of comic books on the Spanish War and the memory of the republican exile in France has grown considerably. In our article, we present, in the first part, a brief background on the 21st century comic strip on the Spanish Civil War and the republican memory. We then sketch an analysis of Bruno Loth’s Dolorès (2016, La Boîte à Bulles), a work that places us on the path to the restitution of a history of shared Franco-Spanish memory. Furthermore, it is representative of the two main characteristics of the comic books on the Spanish Civil War, which will be presented in the conclusions: their meta-historical nature and the prominence of women’s voices in the reconstruction of the anonymous memories of the Republican exile.
