Abstract
This paper analyzes mass media representations and stereotypes in relation to a case of 14th May 2011, involving a former Chief of the International Monetary Fund. We will concern ourselves with the representation of the identity of a social group or an individual -in this case, France or the French people- and the confrontation to otherness. We will see how cross-cultural stereotypes have argumentative functions in media texts and how they make it possible to build an identity. Prior to the analysis we will outline a definition of stereotype.
