Resumen

In 1840, Gautier realized a dream: his first big trip (six months in Spain). After that experience that marks a turning point in his literary and personal career, he comes back to Paris rejuvenated and in control of his emotional and professional life again. From then on, travel became his passion and form of escape. After another trip to Algeria (1845), the poet visits Italy (1850) and other dream destinations (Greece, Turkey, Russia and Egypt). However, in Italy, the poet remembers with nostalgia his first big Spanish adventure intensely lived ten years before that greatly affected him. We’ll look for traces left in the Trip to Italy by this first trip to Spain. We expect to demonstrate that Gautier’s tale, as well as showing the fascination he felt visiting the country of art, appears permeated by a kind of Spanish atmosphere, mainly in the lexicon. The traveler discovers Italy with a strong Spanish gaze.
