Abstract

After pointing out the universal character of language variability, we show that this same concept is very common in Phraseological Units. Drawing on examples in Spanish and French and their treatment in referential dictionaries that we complete with the results of a database of more than 40,000 phraseological units, we also show that the variants used in Peninsular Spanish are the same as those produced in the Spanish spoken in Latin America. The data can thus be extrapolated to other languages spoken as mother tongue in many countries.
