Abstract

The Silex Files series by Belgian comics artist Philippe Foerster –Chaînons manquants (2002), Le Silence des fossiles (2003) and Psycho-Sapiens (2004)– is an original example of transmediality. The unmistakable humour associated with comics and animated cinema which originated with the Flintstones, and which relates to an intentionally anachronistic vision of prehistory, is combined with the traditions and conventions of American crime literature and film noir. At a structural, thematic and aesthetic level, our work aims to analyse the integration of different American film noir characteristic features in the verbal and graphic language of this trilogy. Using the distinctive humour of the French-speaking cartoonist and screenwriter, we look to outline the various intertextual and cinematographic references (from tribute to parody) that appear in the adventures of the lead detective Rex Raw.
