Abstract

This PhD thesis takes as its main hypothesis that proper names must be considered essential elements in the analysis and translation of literary works. In order to demonstrate this, the thesis departs from the analysis of the proper names and their translations into French, Italian and Spanish in the Harry Potter series, written by J.K. Rowling. The main aims of this thesis are: To establish the procedure used to create the proper names according to the criteria that presented in the theoretical framework and to delve into the meaning of these names. To establish a grammatical criterion that allows a classification of the namesin the English original depending on the creation procedure. To analyse the selected names in the translated texts to determine the translation procedure carried out. To establish if the strategy used to translate the names from one language to another is the same one as the one employed in the creation of the original name. To establish if the election of the translation strategies follows a pattern in each of the languages of the translations e analysed and if that determines the translator's choice. To analyse, with percentages, to which extent the strategy used to create the name coincides with the one employed in the translation. With the achievement of these aims, we try to emphasise the understanding of the creation procedure of the original names to carry out a translation that respects the spirit of the original. Usually, translation studies have focused on the analysis of the final translation. In this research we try to demonstrate that, in order to achieve a precise analysis of a translation, the study of the original text is as important as the study of the resulting translation. Regarding the methodology, firstly, we will establish the corpus of the dissertation. Next, we will present the different sections of the analysis according to the formation of proper names. We will also explain how we are going to analyse each name and its translations as well as the method and the order in which they will be presented. After the analysis, it can stated that the strategies of translation change from one language to another. However, we also observe that, with a few exceptions, the same technique is employed in the case of the Spanish translation. This technique is the foreignization that implies a loss of information, while the strategy often changes in the French and Italian translations. We also find that, in the case of the names that have indeed been translated, the formation strategy of the original name does not seem to influence the formation of the target name.
