The present contribution deals with N1N2 sequences in French and Spanish (e.g., point rencontre, carril bici), where a noun (N1) can be followed by another noun (N2) playing the role of a complement or a modifier. This is an expanding phenomenon, particularly in French, which has called the attention of different researchers, who studied N1N2 sequences from two main perspectives: as compound nouns and as noun phrases. However, there has been little research on the valence relationships of many of these sequences (e.g., la consommation énergie, une baisse chômage). Our work reviews the Spanish and French literature on this issue and describes how PORTLEX, a multilingual valence dictionary of the noun phrase, treats N1N2 sequences where N2 constitutes a realisation of the N1 valence. To do so, we will focus on French examples since they are far more numerous than in Spanish or other romance languages.
