Abstract

The study of the functional dimension in self writings requires distinguishing clearly the writer’s motivation and the functions that the text, once published, achieves among readers. From that distinction on, which allows defining a taxonomic pattern, the current paper aims to offer a general review of the variables which may occur in two different directions. On the one hand, self-writing characterizes, due to the dominant presence of some of the most relevant functions in writing, the gnoseologic, testimonial or psychotherapeutic functions. On the other hand, the existence of all those mentioned functions cannot be defined in absolute terms, but referring to the different genres of self-writing: autobiography, memoirs, personal diary, etc. Finally, this review provides relevant data about similarities and differences in the fictional and non-fictional texts performance in autobiographical literature.
