Abstract

This doctoral dissertation joins two disciplines, literature and architecture, from a humanistic perspective. The corpus was created from novels and short stories published in France between 1742 and 1777 and classified within the libertine genre. After the study of the main architectural treatises of the era, the dissertation analyzes domestic space in a moment in which intimacy and comfort in living spaces are at a peak, thus demonstrating that the importance the 18th Century French bestow upon the distribution of the rooms, the ornamentation and the architecture of the gardens is indeed reflected in literary works.
