Abstract

In the second part of the Roman de la Rose, Jean de Meun mentions the myth of the adultery of Venus, Vulcan’s wife. The myth has a twofold function in the text: illustrative and narrative. After a discussion of the origins and continuity of the myth in the Greek and Latin literature, we examine the sources used by Jean de Meun, particularly the interpolation of Alhazen’s optical theory in the text.
