The aim of this paper is to contribute to the discussion of the meaning of the multifunctional connector alors and its translation. As a point of departure, the paper examines the work of M. Tricás and other French semantic-pragmatic studies on this type of markers. The analysis is based on he play Waiting for Godot, where the use of language is central, and, in a sense is devoid of meaning. The first section contains a literature review of alors as a connector. Later, the translations of this marker are analysed. The paper discusses the variety of options available in Spanish and its different meanings, drawing attention to the different argumentative dynamics triggered by the usages of alors in the corpus, which leads to the conclusion that different equivalent in the target language are required.
