Résumé

The vision of love as war between two combatants, Eros/Cupid/Love and the lover, fashions an allegory that French Medieval Literature inherits from Classical erotic literature and, more specifically, from Ovid. I intend to analyze five aspects of this heritage: 1. The significance of Cupid’s attributes in mythology. 2. Anachronism as the way in which medieval literature conveys classical models. 3. The relationship between the texts and medieval iconography of Cupid. 4. The passage of the love/warisomorphism to religious literature. 5. The presence of the love/war metaphor in common speech.
