Julio Casares, iniciador de la fraseología moderna española

Abstract

Julio Casares (1878-1964), from the Real Academia Española (Spanish Royal Academy), was multitalented: he was musician, diplomat, literary critic, philologist and lexicographer. He is considered to be the most important originator of a number of linguistic disciplines in Spain: the modern lexicography and phraseology. With a rich musical, diplomatic and linguistic background (he had a profound knowledge of 18 different languages), he compiled bilingual (Spanish-French and Spanish-English) and monolingual dictionaries with an innovative structure (Diccionario ideológico de la lengua Española, 1942). With his work Introducción a la lexicografía moderna (1950), he lay solid foundations for the modern lexicography. The work became a reference work for researcher in phraseology and paremiology and is still used. His idea of extracting sayings and proverbs of the Diccionario de uso de la lengua española was the origin of the Diccionario de refranes (1975) from Juana G. Campos and Ana Barella, which helped to delimit clearly the paremiology. The diffusion of his work by his grandson, Eduardo Sierra Casares, and his greatgranddaughter, María Sierra, allows us to find out some interesting aspects about the life and work of Julio Casares
